One of the fun subjects in going through the many beautiful churches and cathedrals in Paris and at Chartres and St. Malois the stained glass, much of which dates backas far asthe 12th or 13thcentury. In shooting these gorgeous windows, I used the following method:

1. Spot metering. You don't want anything other than the glass being includedin the exposure calculation because of the difference in luminance, which would result in overexposure and blown detail.

2. Negative Exposure Compensation. Usually -1/3 to -2/3 stop was plenty good to "pop" the colors. It additionally gives you just enough of a faster shutter speed to help fight camera shake. This part is obviously anarbritrary number that works well for me. Do some testing when you first start out and do what looks good to you. Everyone has their own taste for this type work.
