The New Zealand TranzAlpine express makes the trip across the South Island through the Canterbury plans, the Southern Alps, and the West Coast and back again in one day. The train has an open air viewing car which is a great place to take photo's from if you dress warmly and use high shutter speeds (it can be a bit crowded at times - so you have to share the space a bit).

My partner and I did the journey in August and took many photos using a Canon S2 IS and a Canon A80 - I just completed putting some on line at Flickr. I've used the new Flickr maps feature and references to google maps in many of the captions. Queries or comments are most welcome.

(Canon S2 - no post-processing except a little USM after resizing)

(Canon A80 image - some post-processing to correct exposure for evening light)

Ah, this train is a must for me!!

These are very neat, well exposed andtastefullycomposed shots. I especially liked the bridge diagonally pointing at the snowy mountains in the first one. And in the second one, eye pleasing texture and mellowed colour of the dried grass against a piercing blue sky while the snowy mountain making an appealing layer, all together are a joy to behold. I wouldhave thought that it was shot with a D50 or something if Ihadn't read the information. Well done!

There's a reason why New Zealand was an obvious choice for filming "Lord of the Rings."

The landscapes are varied and beautiful. Another place I have to see someday...

Wow, brings back memories of my travels a few years ago. Looks like you had a beautiful day for it. If my memory serves me correctly I went from Greymouth to Christchurch on it. A lovely way to spend the day.

Beautiful series of photos. My wife and I rode on that same train but during spring when it was a bit warmer.

My pics can be seen at if you're interested.

I agree with you absolutely wonderful scenery.

Your photos are from the Taiari Gorge railway, a different train ride further south. I really want to do that journey too. (sorry about the delay in responding, I didn't notice your reply until just now).
