The town is an island in the Mississippi River. There are three highway bridges and one railroad bridge linking it to the mainland and to Illinois.

This was the school for Sabula, everything from kindergarten to 12th grade. Built in the 1880s, I attended this school for 13 years.

It's a middle school now; students are now bussed out of town for high school. A good thing, too. I was the only student enrolled in physics as a senior. Graduating class was about 20 kids.

Main street in Sabula. The years haven't been kind to the town, which has lost population, and a number of fine old structures were lost. In the 60s, in an attempt to improve main street, they cut down the old hitching rails along main street.

This is typical of the earliest homes in the town, almost all built of limestone blocks. This one survives, and is being renovated.

Great shots. I really like #1 - the reflection in the water and the fog create a rather melancholic mood imo.

Some of the happiest times of my life as a boy wereskiffingout among the islands in the fog, in an old john boat. It's an indescribably peaceful and calm experience, and I'm pleased that I was able to capture a little of that atmosphere in the first picture.
