Default Dundee Waterfront

On holiday at Easter, visiting family in Scotland, I spent some time in Tayside, Dundee and Fife. One of the tourist attractions of Dundee is HMS Discovery, Captain Scott's ship from the expedition that made him famous (more here than in the rest of the world), for leading the second party to reach the South Pole in 1912, and heroically dying on the way home.

Amundsen got there first, and unsportingly lived to the tell the tale, in person, rather than in posthumous diary.

Presumably the penguin is homesick, as he's heading south according to the compass rose set in the paving.

Just round the corner is this striking scultpture, representing, I assume, a stormswept lighthouse, symbolic of Dundee's long maritime history

...and this, perhaps, represents a 'Moby Dick' style of whaling boat of olden times. Dundee was a major whaling port.

Looking the other way to show detail in the boat reveals a less attractive bit of waterfront, a superstore with lots of bare brick. The striking office block behind the 'lighthouse' above appears to be completely unused, though it looks relatively good.
