Default Butt of Lewis, Scotland

Northernmost tip of the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland.

David Stevenson built this lighthouse in 1862 (David Stevenson's nephew was Robert Louis Stevenson).

The Butt of Lewis is one of the windiest places in Britain. When we visited, it was a relatively "nice" (about 14 degrees celcius or 52 degrees farenheit) with about a 20 mile per hour (30 kmh) wind.

There is a sign that indicates where a person dropped off the cliff to their death near this lighthouse. Another location down the road a person fell into a hole carved by the waves of the sea.

There was a young lad, strangely, camping in a tent to the left of the lighthouse while I was there. No other car was present except ours.

The next day I ran into someone who said the tent was no longer there the next morning. That previous night there had been a gale with 70 mph (110 kph) winds on the island. I wonder if the young lad had packed up his tent prior to the gale?

Mystery surrounds these lighthouses. Another lighthouse in a remote area of Scotland had three keepers stationed at it. They all disappeared without a trace. Legend has it a massive "rogue wave" may have caught the keepers unaware while performing their chores around the lighthouse.

One of our neighbours was born on the Isle of Lewis. She has passed on....but born there in the 1920's, I believe.

I'm enjoying your pix of Scotland.

My ancestors are from the Isle of Skye...do you have any pictures of this locale ?

Lesmore49,

Glad you're enjoying the photos.

Here is a photo from Skye.

It's the Ornsay Lighthouse build by David Stephenson (the same person who built the lighthouse a the Butt of Lewis) built 1857.

Hello poster did you happen to capture a picture of the sign of the man falling to his death? This is of most importance to me. Please let me know as soon as possible. Or if you remember a name or anything for him. The year ect. Please and thank you so much!
