Default My recent trip to the mountains

We took my wife's parents to Cherokee and Gatlinburg last week. We travelled on Monday and went into the park on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday it got cold and rained all day, and Friday we drove home. So, I didn't get as many pictures as usual, and my bear pictures were taken with an 18-135 lens. Left the 70-300 in the hotel room by mistake. Live and learn.

1) Gatlinburg from my hotel balcony.

2) My best bear picture with 135mm stretched to the breaking point.

3) The water wheel that turned the stone that ground the wheat into flour at the Grist Mill in Cades Cove.

4} Missionary baptist Church in Cades Cove. Pulpit view.

5) Missionary Baptist Church from the entrance.

6) Missionary Baptist Church.

Mama and her two cubs, trying to ignore the horde of tourists and Rangers up on the road.

We were stopped at an overlook, when these Canadian Geese came up to see what I was eating. When it realized I had a powdered doughnut, the game was over. he ate a small piece of it from my fingers. I know, you're not supposed to feed the wildlife, but I already confessed to Mole, and I promise not to ever do it again.

We went in to Elkmont campground ( Cades Cove) to the store, and I spotted the Swallowtails in a swarm. There were hundreds of them at one time, then they scattered. That's when I got these shots.

As a teen I attended a summer camp near Gatlinburg. Wow, that town has changed.

We started going up and taking the kids, back in the early eighties, and it has changed a lot since then. Not all for the better I'm afraid.

The missus & I *love* Gatlinburg...not "downtown" Gatlinburg with the Chinese trinkets but the surrounding area. The cabin we generally get is just to the right and about mid-picture. The first time we went I thought I'd gone deaf it was so quiet.

In the last 33 years or so, wife and I have been up there maybe two times by ourselves. We always took the son and a friend until he ditched the friend in favor of a softer, more curvy one. Now we take the grandkid(s). This trip we took
Wife's parents, so getting away by ourselves is pretty much out of the question, unless we sneak away without telling anyone.
