A little less than 2000 years ago, a stubborn group of Israelites made a last stand against the Roman Empire on a mountain top in Israel known as Masada. For 3 years this group of Jewish zealots held out against the Roman army but finally, after a monumental effort in building a wooden and earthen ramp to the top of the mountain, the armies of Rome prevailed. What the Romans found were the bodies of the zealots who had decided it was better to die free in a suicide pact than to live as slaves or die by Roman hands. After this fall, all other Israelites were dispersed from their land to many areas of the world. This tree, able to eke out a life on this barren mountain top, is a testament to the will of those people.

Technically I don't consider this to be a great photograph, but emotionally it does it for me.

Canon 20D, 17-85mm @ 28mm, 1/200 sec, f/16, ISO 400.
Slight crop, levels, shadow/highlight adjust, USM.

ok geoff...i got a question for you...

wat do you think would make this technically better?

now, true it is taken at a "harsh" time of day....but for your situation, you did a great job

nice blue sky, great composition

nothing blown(as far as i can see...)

well done...

Vito

Hey, Vito - thanks for the encouragement!

I guess what I was thinking about from a technical perspective was the composition rather than exposure. It seemed like the composition was kind of barren, sort of like Masada itself. In retrospect, perhaps the composition fits the location very well. So, I guess you've helped convince me that I was a bit premature in my evaluation of my own image!

It brings back memories of our trip there. At the time I was there my camera stopped working, so all the photos I took didn't survive. The Digital was an old Epson and it kept erasing the pictures as i took them.

That's a very emotional photograph. The best part is, the Roman's prevailed.

That's a nice photograph.

Thanks for the compliment on the photograph. However, I am very curious as to why you mentioned the last part about the Roman's prevailing...

Thanks, ILISCOOL! You really need to get out and around in the country you live in. It's a great place with so much to see and it's only the size of New Jersey so getting around in it is so simple. I'd love to see you do that and get loads of pictures for posting...
