Hi all, never been here before but need some help if anyone can provide it. I'm working on building my own steadycam using Johnny Lee's instructions found at http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/steadycam/ and one of the modifications he suggested was to use an actual tripod head instead of his own mounting system. I want to do this, mainly because I want to continue using the quick-release plate on my camera, instead of having to take it on and off every time I want to switch between my tripod and this steadycam. My question, though, is are all quick-release plates and platforms universal? Or will I need to find a separate Sunpak 6400 UT mounting head to use on the steadycam? I'm kind of new to all of this, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

They are not all the same.

Even in a single manufacturer's line you will often find several variations of quick release plates.
