Wondering what people are using.Ideally, something which folds up so that I can toss it in a back pack or messenger bag and take everywhere.Seems the only thing in this category, at least on a cursory glance, are those table mini tripods, which fold out to about a foot or less in height.The main use would be for night time photos. Lot of beautifully lit cathedrals and such in Europe.

Tiny and light (but I wouldn't call it sturdy.)Â* Does the job, & has a removable plate that can live on the camera:

How does the leg locking mechanism work on that? It's hard to tell from the photos.

Ordered it from Amazon for $87.Â* I belive there are different versions of the Max IS.Â* One with a ball mount and another with a more traditional mount.I got the one with the ball mount.Tried one of the Sunpack-made ones at Ritz which goes for $35.Â* More bulkier and heavier and not as solid as the Velbon.
