I am looking into purchasing Sanyo's underwater camcorder Xacti VPC-E1/CA65. Is there any extra protection I can provide to minimize damage, such as grease or something extra to keep the battery/memory card compartment sealed?

I've read it is recommended to replace the seals every year. What can I do to prolong the camcorder's "underwater" life?

Thanks in advance.

This camera is only waterproof to 1.5m so it's only really for use in the surf or on the beach. Even snorkelling it's be very easy to exceed the 1.5m limit. If you want something more you'd be better with a camera and housing. There are a few options Ikelite do housings for few video cameras http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/videoone.htmlSony do 10 metre housings for some of their cameras http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/video/sony/spk.html. There are also the Ewa-Marine plastic bags http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/v...wa_marine.html.

A good o-ring seal will keep your camera dry within it's working limits. Grease should only be used to lubricate the o-rings and should be used very sparingingly it does not make the camera any more waterproof it just allows the o-ring to slide into place easily. Make sure the o-ring is clean and undamaged, make sure the seat is clean and undamaged. Lightly grease the o-ring so that it just glistens, you should not see globs of grease. Too much grease attracts dirt and hairs and these can cause leaks by interfering with the o-ring seal.

I can't say it often enough do not use excess grease it causes leaks it doesn't prevent them.
