Default Has anyone taken an Olympus Stylus 850 underwater...

We'll be taking a cruise in summer and wanted to take some underwater photos while scuba diving. Not sure how deep we'll be going. Probably not too deep since it's a beginners excursion. Was wondering if the Olympus Stylus 850 will hold up underwater. Thanks guys!

It's only rated to 10ft so it's not suitable for diving. I think you can get a cheap waterproof housing for it that would enable you to take it diving. http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/d...0sw/index.html

I had Olys 720 and 1030. I sold both very quick, because of very poor image quality. Pentax OPTIO W60 (http://forums.steves-digicams.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=598499&forum_id=71) is much much better, but none of them is suitable for diving. For diving you need a good camera with image stabilization and with special underwater housing.

I do not know about diving and taking pictures underwater. However, I can tell you that I fell out of my white water raft with the OS850 in my pocket. I was underwater 2ft maybe 3ft. The camera survived the water pressure of the rapid and head pressure. I continued to take nice pictures the rest of the trip. I did not tried to take picutes under water. The other big advantage of this camera is the low light ISO1600. I've been able to take photos where other cameras gave bad results. The biggest disadvantage in my opinion is that you cannot capture a 640X480 movie longer than 10 seconds.

I hope this helps.

Don't know the underwater track record for the Oly SW850 but did own an Oly SW 770 which was rated for 10 meters. Since I only free dive to about 5 meters thought it would be fine. Leaked on the first trip. Had it repaired and it leaked again first time underwater.
Olympus would not repair it a second time. So much for quality control!

I'd be careful about buying this. Good luck.

Hal

ps I've been shooting underwater for about 10 years and, while underwater cases will leak on occasion, I've never had a comparable experience.

I have this camera and used it during my honeymoon in the caribbean. Pictures came out fairly well, I attached a few to show you.
