Default Online Photo Album Scripts for Your Website

(Duplicate posted in Photo Sharing Sites Forum)

If you're serious about displaying your digital images online you should consider getting your own domain and website.

Domains are cheap these days, as little as $8 - $10 per year. ( http://www.10-domains.com )

Hosting is inexpensive as well. I ran across a service ( http://www.simplehost.com ) that offers UNLIMITED web space and 20G traffic for $7.50 per month. They include your domain registration as well. The UNLIMITED web space part makes their hosting plan ideal for a photo site. I haven't used them so I can't vouch for their reliability.

Once you get a domain and website, you'll need a good photo display script. I've used two cgi scripts that I like. emAlbum ( http://www.emalbum.com ) and My Photo Gallery ( http://www.fuzzymonkey.org/cgi-bin/n...y/software.cgi ). Both scripts are free, however emAlbum is about to be released in a commercial version ($25) with added functionality. (Note: The My Photo Gallery demo was inoperable this morning - I sent an email to notify them so it should be operable again soon).

I've just started a website design and hosting service for small businesses. You can see emAlbum in use on my site ( http://www.carefreewebsitesolutions....in/emAlbum.cgi ). I use it there to display sample templates. I also used it on a client site to display photos and floor plan images ( http://www.sunlakelivingsystems.com/cgi-bin/emAlbum.cgi ).

I've been testing My Photo Gallery on my site ( http://www.carefreewebsitesolutions....hoto/index.cgi ). This script is more difficult to install, but it is easier to use once installed. You use your browser to create albums and upload photos, and it automatically generates the thumbnail images with links to the photo. It can optionally display the EXIF data, allow comments, and automatically add a watermark to your images (useful if you're selling photos). I modified the EXIF display to only show the date photo was taken. You can use this script for sound and movie clips as well. My Photo Gallery uses a template to display photos, so you have complete freedom in the way it looks.

I also set up a photo site for my granddaughter at http://www.lindi.net using emAlbum. My son and daughter-in-law are maintaining the site, so don't judge my web design ability by what you see there :-).

To set up your own photo hosting site, you'll need to know how to build webpages and install cgi scripts. Or, you can get someone else to do it for you. Email me if you want me to set up your site for you.
