I have my own web space and I'm looking at hosting a gallery of pictures. I've used Coppermine and Gallery in the past, but was wondering if anyone had any good recomendations?

I host with Dreamhost and used Gallery (then gallery2) for a few years. not very flexible and on that host anyway, very slow. now i use a wordpress blog with a photo theme linking to photos on picasa. slideshows and much more come for free. don't tell anyone, but if i need more space, i just make up another google account.

Have you tried jAlbum?

The album development software is free and it doesn't require the server side resources that Gallery and similar solutions need. You can create an album using it's tools on your desktop, then publish it to the site of your choice (and they can also host them for a monthly fee, but you can publish to another site instead).

It seems to be a very popular choice for an easy way to create nice albums, and the desktop software for creating and maintaining the albums is cross platform (Windows, Linux, OS X and other Operating Systems where java is available):

In addition to complex but powerful programs such as jalbum, you might also consider this little free jewel. It's so simple to use, yet produces really neat pages with places to write your descriptions, etc.
