Default Cobra D650 flash and Nikon D90

I have an old (25 years + ) Cobra D650 flash unit with Nikon adaptor. Can it be used with my new Nikon D90 DSLR ?

Welcome to the forums. The trigger voltage of the D650 appears to be safe with modern cameras from user tests I've seen.

But, you would need to use manual exposure on the camera with manual settings on the flash for the ISO speed and aperture being used, using appropriate settings for subject distance (you're not going to get TTL flash from a model like that, as flash systems were redesigned for digital in order to use a metering preflash due to differences in how imaging sensors reflect light as compared to film). Older flash models will not understand the newer commands needed for digital cameras and will not know about the camera settings you're using. IOW, if you're looking for an automatic solution, you'll want to look at a newer "designed for digital" flash like the Nikon SB-600, SB-800 or SB-900 so that they'll understand the camera settings being used and can work with the newer command protocols.
