i've been looking foreverrrr for a new digicam that would replace my kodak. in order of importance i'm looking for video performance, compact, photo performance, battery life, and price. my front-runner is canon's sd800 IS, it fits my order perfect as i can see and i haven't seen any competitors step up with a formidable challenger, thus posting a topic here where hundreds of people with different cameras might being able to weigh in on a worthy opponent. anyone? t.i.a.

The SD800 is an excellent camera. With wide angle, optical viewfinder and excellent lens it is hard to beat in the sub-compact category.

Since you list video first in your criteria, keep in mind that the SD800 takes around 2Mb/sec for best quality movies. So budget a large card.
