Hi. I'm looking to buy a camera that I can use to take high quality photos of just about anything to use as textures for 3d modeling. For example:wood, concrete, plastic, bark, etc. This means the camera must be able to take pictures of high quality, and be able to take detailed pictures of close up and mid-ranged objects.

What is the most important specification in a camera for this type of work? Megapixels? Resolution? Camera Lense compatability?

Can anyone recommend a good camera under $1,000? I have been looking at the Nikon D40 but I have essentially no experience when it comes to cameras or lenses.
