I own an analog Minolta camera circa 1991 (auto-focus) and SLR. Minolta was purchased by Sony and it is my understanding that the Alpha A100 will be compatable with a Telephoto lens that I already own.

Does anyone have knowledge or experience with this camera?

I was originally looking at the Nikon D40.

Any suggestions?

Actually, Sony only purchased the camera business from Konica-Minolta, not the whole company.

There were a couple of Minolta Autofocus lenses that had some trouble working with the Konica-Minolta 7D and 5D, but I haven't heard of anyone having problems with any Minolta Autofocus lenses mounted toa Sony Alpha 100. In fact, people that have said they had problems with certain lenses and their KM 7D or 5D have said that the same lens works fine on their Sony.

You can check out the Konica Minolta / Sony Alpha dSLRforum here.
