Agreed. There's a lot to be said for jumping in at the deep end.

But there is a difference between the art of photography and the science of photography. And if someone is attracted to the art, I don't think that overwhelming them with the science does them any good.

We learn from our mistakes, and if we are smart and/or lucky, from the mistakes of others. A P&S digicam would let the OPhave some early sucesses before picking up the D200. And when things go wrong, he or she will have accumulated the knowledge to figure out what it was, and learn from the mistake.

Just a different ... well, you know.
