Another thing that I tend to do in harsher lighting with the Maxxum 5D is use the "Hi Key Zone Matching" feature with the jpeg images. Basically, it optimizes the sensor sensitivity and tone curve to retain the most highlight detail, at the expense of a bit of shadow detail.

Anytime I've got harsher lighting along the river banks, I tend to prefer retaining as much of the highlights as possible, especially if I've got people in the images to try to keep from burning the skin tones too much in direct light. But, better total DR range would be even better from my point of view (which is the main reason I tend to shoot mostly raw + jpeg and welcome any Dynamic Range improvements in newer camera models).

A big thanks to your all for the advices. I justed placed an order for the olympus e510 with two kit lenses.
