I am in need of a replacement for my Coolpix 4500. I do alot of technical articles regarding automotive repair so here are my considerations in choosing a new camera:

1. Macro, Macro, Macro

2. Ability for burst mode where you can hold down the shutter and camera takes a series of shots

3. Compact size

4. Good extra light source...My coolpix 4500 didn't have this and would have a hard time focusing if the subject was too dark...sometimes I would have to use a flashlight to help it focus on the subject

5. Ability to easlilyautomatically white balance on macro shots.

6. Good flash (even if it is an add-on) forlow *********s of entire vehicle

7. Durability (tends to get banged around in the field)

Price: Hopefully under $500

anyhelp is appreciated...

You might take a look at the Canon S-5. It has a hotshoe on which you can mout a great external flash like the Canon EX-430. It is great at macro, being able to properly focus on and take a photo of an obect leaning up against the lens mount. It does excellent videos, and gives you 12X optical zoom, but nowide angle mode.

It seems to fit your needs rather nicely.
