For your stated purposes, the Sony will perform much better than the Oly. The oly's focus will not compete, nor will the high iso performance - both necessary for the sports. But again, even the sony will only do well for sports if you're using the appropriate lenses. Without those you'll still get poor results.

Out of the two I agree with John. I've just been reminding myself the lenses available that would be applicable for indoor sports and neither has anything in the 'cheap'/middle pricerange. I'm only mentioning this as I don't want you to be disappointed. I used to shoot with a Konica Minolta 5D (replaced by the A100 when Sony bought KM), and had to change all my kit when I started shooting sports. I'm now with Canon but Nikon also do good lenses, the only problem with Nikon is that you can't use all of them with the D40/D60 so that rules out entry level bodies. Outdoor sports with the A200 will be OK with the standard Tele zoom lenses but low light is key and that's where the lenses are essential. So if you want to get the basketball then go for Canon XTi so you have the opportunity to get the right glass when it can be afforded.
