Looking for a long zoom and like the Leica lens on the Lumix. The new Olympus 570UZ seems to have a few more features, but is also $150 more. Is it worth the extra? It seems that the Olympus has a zoom ring but the Lumix does not. Any suggestions?

Over at DPReview.com they have a review of the 570UZ's predecessor, the 560UZ, and include comparisons with the Panny FZ18 and Fuji S8000. Probably be worth a gander...

Steve reviewed both the 560UZ and the FZ18. He really liked the FZ18.

The Oly SP-570 is a good camera, but the problem is that it is rather slow, all the way around. It is slow to focus (1 to 2 seconds)and slow to write to the data card (4 to 7 seconds).

In contrast the FZ-18 focuses fast (no more than 1 second) and it is fast to write to the data card (less than 2 seconds). But that does not mean that it is without faults. The Fz-18 IQ tends to get soft as it nears the far end of its zoom range. Increase the ISO and you will see graininess.

The Fuji S-8000 is a bit more tolerant. It can stand increased ISO's up to ISO 400, and it is just about as fast as the FZ-18 to focus. Every ultrazoom has some compromises.

Here is a Fuji S-800 photo sample.
