To back up what Mark said about the investment being in the lenses, not the camera - I shoot Pentax (mostly landscape and macros, rarely sports, and always on a very tight budget) and am still using lensesI bought new in 1980. They have outlasted a film camera I had for 15 yearsand one (well, two but the second oneI sold and is still going strong) digital bodies.

It definitely pays to get the best glass you can afford - a mediocre lens on an excellent camera will give you a mediocre picture (I didn't see much difference when I used my old kit lens on two cameras - one a 6 mp and one a 14 mp), while a top quality lens will give you as good a picture as the camera is capable of.
