I'd suggest starting a new thread versus tagging on to an older one for better responses.

I doubt you'd see much difference in the performance between these two 70-300mm lenses. But, I haven't researched them and read their reviews anywhere. Both are generally considered to be the next step up with a bit better quality compared to the budget 70-300mm type lenses within the Canon and Nikon brands. For birding, you may want something longer than 300mm. I'd start a new thread and ask for comments from members that are more familiar with these bodies.

Yes, I know that 300 mm is a bit too short. It is a compromise for me, because e.g. the 100-400 is about $1400 and heavy!

I think I have all sorted out, will start a new thread next time!
