Studying the latest pre-Photokina sub-compact Point & Shoot releases from Panasonic, Canon and Sony, I am interested in the Panasonic TZ-25, the Canon SD990 (ixus 980), SD880 (ixus 870) and the Sony T-500.

Of particular interest to me are the HD features of the TZ25 and the T500, and the video compression features of the T-500 and the SD990/SD880).

I am wondering how much of an improvement the HD features of the TZ25 and T500 will be over the Canon cameras without HD. Also, will I be able to play the HD video on my computer and my Pioneer HDTV with success and without much hassle?

Concerning the MP4 video compression of the Sony and Canon cameras, how much of an advantage is this? Is it just a matter of the smaller memory card size required, or are there other advantages?

Obviously I would like to see a review of these cameras in Steve's Digicams, but I don't know if that will happen soon.

What about Nikon and Olympus? Do they have comperable cameras or is it possible that they will be announced before completion of Photokina?
I guess I will have to wait and see.
