I'm deciding between the Panasonic TZ5 and Canon SD790IS

So far this is what I find:

+ better screen
+ 10x Optical Zoom
+ 720p video
- Noisy images, even at ISO 100
- Crazy blurring to reduce noise

+ better quality photos
+ a bit smaller
- 3x Optical Zoom
- no HD video

I'll be using it to take reference photos for drawing (portraits, macro, landscapes, etc), textures, and quick photos of general stuff that catches my eye. Would the 10x zoom and HD capability outweigh the difference in photo quality? I can get both cameras at about the same price.

The flash results for the Canon in reviews look quite a bit better than for the TZ5. You could also consider a Sony W150 or W170 which have a little more zoom than the Canon.

I think the SD790 is a better cam, mostly owing to the Digic III processor.

The TZ5 has poor image quality both at low and high ISO's (therefore majorly avoid).

It's difficult to get everything in one package. For instance, you might get HD video but not a good camera for photos.

Another option would be the Ricoh R8 in black, which has it's ups and downs but would be a very cool camera for an artist
