I'm looking for a user-friendly camera for my boyfriend. Neither of us are photographers by any means. Bascially I am looking for something that is compact, takes good pictures, has a decent optical zoom, and has the ability to take good videos. (And, if it came in blue that would be a huge plus. See? I told you we were amatures.)Something that will appeal to men's fascination of new technology would be great too.

I have been recommended Canon for an affordable, yet reliable camera. I was looking at their Powershot models, and the SD1100 IS seemed like a nice camera that would be suitable for his needs, but one of the reviews said that you could not zoom while taking videos with this model... something that would be a no go since most of the videos would probably be of his nephews and niece while they're running around.Does anyone know about that feature?

If I could get some recommendations that would be great. I am looking at the sites recommended cameras (the 1100 was on it), but I don't want to miss out on important features like zoom during video recordings. And, sites don't really list that kind of stuff as a specification...

It would be great to be able to go to a store to pick one out or test it out, but we're both deployed overseas. Any advice you guys can give is much appreciated as Im finding it difficult and frustrating to find the "perfect" camera for my boyfriend.

Most Canon cameras don't allow you to use the optical zoom while taking videos, but you can use digital zoom. It's going to degrade the picture quality a little (the closer you zoom, the more it will degrade picture quality) but it should work well most of the time.

The new Canon SX10is does allow the use of optical zoom during video, but it's a large and heavy camera - probably not what your boyfriend is looking for.

If using optical zoom during video is a major issue for your boyfriend, you should look at the Panasonic TZ5, FX150 and FX37. Or you can look at the Kodak Z1085 or V1273.
