Hello everyone,

Just recently my first camera (Sony DSC-P73) decided to quit on me,
so now i am looking for a new camera to buy.

When it comes to digital compact camera's i'm pretty much a newbie,
but after days of reading reviews i'm kinda lost and confused whether i'm making the right choice or not.

First of all i've set myself to a budget of €200, i'll use the camera primarily to take pictures of family outings (inside & outside), parties. The subjects i'll take pictures of will be close by, i won't be printing or enlarging pictures.

These are the camera's that appeal the most to me and are within my price range:
  • Canon Digital Ixus 80 IS[/*]
  • Canon Digital Ixus 85 IS[/*]
  • Sony Cybershot DSC-W120[/*]
  • Sony Cybershot DSC-W130[/*]
  • Sony Cybershot DSC-W150[/*]
  • Sony Cybershot DSC-W170[/*]
I hope all this makes sense to you, English isn't my first language so bear with me :P
If you have questions please let me know

kind regards,

All perfectly good choices. In your case the most significant differences may be flash performance. Dig into the reviews on various sites to research that. Or ... just buy from a store that makes returns easy.

Rollei (a famous European camera name from the past)are offering a range of excellent compact digicams, one of which (XS-10inTouch),I bought for my daughter at Christmas, and tested thoroughly.

You probably won't hear about them in this forum from anyone but me, as I think they're not establishedin the USA yet. Its lens, image quality, and ease of use are superb in my opinion. In these compact cameras, lens quality is all-important.

You can read reviews about the Rollei and other ranges on my local camera shop's website at...

http://www.wrexham-cameras.com/WHATS-NEW/BD-ROLLEI.htm, and...

and http://www.wrexham-cameras.com/WHATS-NEW/BD-5.htm, andon Rollei's own multilingual websiteat http://www.rollei.com/, and...

At http://www.wrexham-cameras.com/WHATS...ST-FUJ-CAN.htm, they compare old & new compact cameras, and also discuss the latest models in the Ixus range, which you are also considering...

"Even the fabulous Canon Ixus 970 or 980 would strugle to take such sharp pictures if you use them in the automatic mode".

They use Ixus cameras themselves at home, but regard them as expensive relative to the Rolleis. You should look up local prices yourself, as the ukpound has fallen nearly to parity with the Euro.

I would recommend that you visit a proper camera shop, and try out a few different models. If you take an SD card with you, you can examine the results at home before you decide.

Good luck! Sensor quality and camera design have improved so much, I expect you'll be astonished by whatever camera you buy!
