Default need to know

I just purchased a Casio EX-Z300 digital camera and I was shocked that there is no printed owner's manual included. The manual is on the included CD-ROM which must be downloaded and then printed. As I have neither a home PC nor a printer, this is ridiculous. Casio will send me a manual but they will charge for it. Is this a new gimmick used by other companies of not including a manual?

This is sadly common practice among manufacturers now.

Sometimes the full manual isn't there in the package at all; just a few 'get you started' notes. In one or two cases I've had to rummage with difficulty for some time on manufacturer's websites to find the full manuals for friends and family's cameras.
