Partly it is big numbers sell cameras to people who don't know really what the big numbers mean.... like the mega pixel race. Partly it is the ability to shoot in super low light and get a a high enough shutter speed for the desired result. Sometimes having the shutter speed too low is worse than having a very noisy image. I have the ability to shoot at 25600 on one of my cameras, I never have had to use it, but I have used 6400 quite a lot so depends on shooting needs and partly the big numbers race.
