I didn't say the Tamron 70-300 Di LD would be very good at sports; I said it wouldn't be bad. It has limitations, but it's probably as good or better than anything else at twice the price. It does, however, fall short of the Canon 70-300 IS USM, Nikon 70-300 AF-S VR and Sony 70-300 'G'.

TCAV - as I said, Good and Bad are relative terms.

For example, I might say the Tamron 70-300 is the best of the Grade-C lens choices. Relative to the other 'C' students, it's a good lens. Whether or not a person considers a 'C' good or bad will differ from person to person.

I can only speak for myself, and a "B" grade lens is as low as I would go and still call something "good". Lenses like the Canon, Nikon and Sony lenses you mention. In the end, it all comes down to whether a person considers a "C" to be "not bad" or "not good enough".
