Default options for k-mount cameras

I'm looking for a good mid range dSLR ($500-$1000) that I can use my old pentax k-mount lenses on. What are my options? will mainly be used for portraits, wildlife, landscapes and action shots.

I'd probably look at the Pentax K-x.

The K-7 body is more advanced. But, The K-7 including a kit lens is going to start out around $999 discounted now, and the K-x is available for less (and the K-x has a bit better performance at the highest ISO speed settings). On the downside, you can't see your active AF point in the viewfinder with the K-x. So, some users may not like that, depending on what you're accustomed to (but, you can set it to use the 5 AF points closest to the center or set it to use center point only if desired).

As Jim indicated, Pentax currently has 2 models - the KX (entry level) and the K7 (semi pro - currently top of the line model). Both are under $1K in that speculation is that Pentax is getting ready to announce new models at a camera show in September. The K7 was $1300 a year ago (body only).

For more information, I would go down to the Pentax dSLR forum at

... as there are a lot of folks there that shoot with both bodies.
