Default A Newbie Who Needs Help!!

I am in the market for a new digital camera. With all new models currently on the market and with new ones arriving this fall, decisional paralysis is making my head hurt. I am looking for the most versatile camera that is good for roadtrips/vacations as well as fieldtrips close to home.

Features That Are Important:
  • The most MP and Optical Zoom for the money
  • Image Stabilization
  • Good AF for Landscape / Wildlife
  • Built in flash with optional hotshoe as my skills advance
  • AA instead of proprietary battery
  • Clear, crisp shots with good color saturation
The Candidates:
  • Canon SX20IS... 12.1 MP|20X Zoom (28-560mm)
  • Fuji S2550... 12.2 MP|18X Zoom (28-504mm)
  • Kodak Z981... 14.0 MP|26X Zoom (26-676mm)
  • Nikon L110/P100... 12.1 MP|15X Zoom (28-420mm)/10.3 MP|26X Zoom (26-678mm)
  • Panasonic DMC-FZ35... 12.1 MP|18X Zoom (27-486)
Please offer your opinions/suggestions, pros and cons of each, and if you think there is something better, by all means please share. Also, recommendations are needed in buying online and experiences you've had with the company. Any assistance you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum. We're pleased that you dropped by.

Firstly cross the Fuji 2550 and the Nikon L110 off your list. The have not received either good professional reviews, and even worse user reviews. The best bang for the buck is the Panasonic FZ-35. No, it does not have either a hot shoe, nor AA batteries, but the FZ-35 is at an all time low price and it is the most user friendly camera of your entire group.

So, you are probably saying to yourself, but I really wanted that hot shoe. You don't need it! you can use a Slave Flash instead that is just as powerful as the Canon EX-420 and costs $50 instead of $200+. It will synch right up with your camera and flash exposure will be automatic.

Behind the FZ-35, our #1 choice, comes the Canon SX-20, followed by the Kodak Z981. A Slave Flash (you might want to begin some research on Slave Flashes) will also work nicely with the Z981.

The Fujifilm HS-10 meets your requirements but only has 10MP.
