Default Replacement for the Nikon D40?

First off, can you still purchase this camera brand new?
If so, can you please recommend a reputable retailer who still carries them?

Is there a "newer model" replacement for the Nikon D40 in the same price range that's actually an improvement over the D40?

Are there other brand/models to consider as an entry level DSL that you might consider on par with, or better than the D40 for around the same price?

If you need a better idea of what I'll be shooting, you can check out my other thread here:

Need to Replace my Canon SD850 IS

Thank you!

I answered this question in detail in my original post to you. The Nikon D-40 cannot be purchased new. It has been replaced by the Nikon D-3100.
