Default Beginner camera for Still and Video/ School Trip

Hello all,

I have been asked to help a friend purchase a camera for a 14 year old who is going on a class trip to DC in Nov. He will want to take still as well as video and will be indoors( museums) as well as outside at the monuments. I have looked at the Canon A495 as well as the Canon A3100IS. I am not familiar with any entry level Nikons or other makes. They would be willing to go higher end refurbished up to $150.00. I think the A3100IS would be a good starting point. I don't think HD video is necessary for this new camera user.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the Forum. We're pleased that you dropped by.

The Kodak Z-915, a camera which multiple Forum members have used and liked my be a very good choice for your situation. The Z-915 has 10X optical zoom, with full automatic as well as manual controls. It also does Standard video is powered by 2 AA batteries (rechargeable NiMH Eneloops suggested) and sells for around $100.

Another possibility would be the Canon A-480 which is still available at some dealers.Beach Camera (a respected e-tailer) has a Canon refurbished A-480 at $69.99 with free shipping at the link listed below:

I use the Canon A-480 myself and have attached a photo sample. Please just click on the link below:
