Default DMC-LX5 software question

Hi, would appreciate any feedback. A Panasonic LX-5 is being shipped to me; I already own a Canon Rebel XT (which came with Digital Photo Professional for converting RAW to JPG). A techie at Panasonic just told me today that their software for the LX-5 does not allow the user to convert RAW to JPG. I'm hoping he is incorrect, as I don't want to make a further investment in having to purchase Photoshop CS5 or Photoshop Lightroom 3.

The other contender I researched was Canon S95, but chose the LX-5 because it takes twice the amount of pics on one battery charge; it has auto focus and zoom in video mode; hot shoe option; 1cm vs. 5cm. for close ups; and wider angle.

IF the LX-5 software can not convert RAW to JPG, are there more economical options than Photoshop? [P.S. I would be using this for bicycle riding and don't want to lug around the DSLR.] Many thanks.

Oops, sorry... I'm a pc user.
