No, the f200exr is not up to the task either. the nikon p7000 i mentioned would be much better option if you had to go bridge, but then the price difference is just not there to be worth it.

Also, I was thinking that with incredible developments in sensor technology even the smallest todays' sensor would rival some "old" APS...
really, they don't. some of the better 1/1.7" cams like the nikon p7000, canon g12, offer pretty clean 800 and 1600 iso, but still not resolving the same amount of detail and again no dof control
I was talking about a S200exr and it has a 1/1.6 sensor! supoussed that this sensor is better, isn't it?

Just to add my 2p worth. I have just sold my Fuji S8000fd as it was not up to what I wanted. I now have an Olympus E420 and it is waaaaaaaay better than the bridge camera. The bridge will limit what your girlfriend can do and I think that even tho now she would like on she will get frustrated with its limitations and I think pretty quickly.

Entry level dSLR's are around the same price as bridge cameras. On Amazon the E420 with kit is 289 and the S200exr is 283.

The decision at the end of the day is yours but I would go with dSLR.

Olympus E420, 17.5-45mm, 14-42mm, 40-150mm, 70-300mm and 25mm lens

Kodak Z950
