So a Nikon body with the 18-55 kit lens will do your architecture and landscape photography nicely, and yes, there's a Nikon 70-300 VR that will do your telephoto work well.

As for Pentax, their 55-300 isn't as good as Nikon's 70-300 VR.

And while Canon has good lenses too, their bodies have a slightly smaller sensor and so a slightly narrower angle of view, making them less suitable for your architecture and landscape photography.

I'd take a good look at the Nikon D3100 or D5000.
I wouldn't be dismissive of the Pentax 55-300mm lens.

I'm speaking from experience.

I've got a Pentax 55-300 mm, had it since June 2008. Use it all the time...a lot of time out in winter...20-25 below...spend a lot of time on winter trails with this lens attached to my K10D.

Many of the outdoor pictures I've got with this lens are excellent.

In addition, Popular photography confirms my experience with this lens, in two articles.

Pop Photo assign this lens as one of the top tele zoom lens in their 2010 2010 Top Gear Outdoors ratings...top gear for less.

In fact...the rating of this lens was very high, particularly for a consumer lens.

Here's the test.

To be sure, the Pentax 55-300 is better than Sony's 75-300 and the other low price lenses in that range. But it isn't as good as Nikon's 70-300 AF-S VR, Canon's 70-300 IS USM or Sony's 70-300 'G', all of which cost significan't more.

I didn't say it wasn't good; I said it wasn't as good.
