I have fuji S2800 and panasonic Lz10, both uses AA batteries and should satisfy amateur photography.

I was hesitant to get away from AA batteries as well. If a person is shooting all day at some event, the proprietary batteries are fine - lighter, smaller, and go the distance if we're talking about the better cameras. But, if we're shooting infrequently, i.e. pulling the camera out of the drawer for a shot or two every day, we'll find dead batteries and the scene lost.

So I agree, stick with the AA batteries as long as you can. Canon has several that use them. Heck, I use them in my dSLR occasionally.
