Default Please help re question on zoom/lens

Hi there.
I'm about to buy my first slr which comes with a 18-55mm lens. Obviously I'm aware that i can zoom in with this but will I also be able to take photos of something close up like I would be able to do on a normal compact camera with no zoom? Also can I take a photo using body only with no lens attached or will this not work? If i can would this be something I would have to do if I wanted to take a photo of something very close up to me?
Any info you can give me would be appreciated.

An 18-55mm zoom should be able to focus to about a foot (30cm). Whether this is close enough for you is to be decided.

Shooting without a lens on a DSLR with get you a blank, probably all white, image. It will also expose the sensor to dirt and moisture so is not recommended.

Shooting extreme closeups requires one of several solutions.

- A macro lens. Highest quality and price.
- Extension tubes. Goes between your lens and the camera Middle cost but results dependent on the quality of the lens.
- Screw on close up lenses. These screw on to the front of your lens and can offer acceptable results for less cost.

Welcome to the expensive world of DSLR but the results are worth it!
