I would agree, run away from superzoom lenses or if you really want just one lens buy a bridge camera.

Don't you also recommend the Canon 18-135mm lens?

I have the 28-135, which is an old full frame design. It's not great, but it's not rubbish either. Certainly gets me by until I can afford the good stuff (if ever). No way I would go back to an ultrazoom point and shoot.
