Default Point and Shoot camera madness...

Hi Group,

I'm new to posting in this forum but have been a longtime lurker. Anyway, my 13 year old son wants to start getting into Photography, but I'm steering him towards buying a point and shoot first to try things out, before getting totally addicted (and sapping funds from my wallet for new glass all the time) and I was wondering what everybody is using in the point and shoot realm when your real DSLR rig stays in the bag.

The deal with my son is he is also interested in shooting video too.

So that is a needed feature.

He wants me to buy him a Canon SX230HS for his birthday because he stumbled across a blog post about how somebody tricked one out to record pro audio while still shooting video.

Details here:

I don't have a problem spending $500 to set my son on the path. But I'm wondering if the Canon SX230 will also deliver decent stills. And be a camera he can grow with.

Does anyone have this specific camera? And if so, how does it perform still wise?

Any and all responses are appreciated!

Thanks in advance.
