Low priced point and shoot with decent zooms include Fuji's T200 or Pentax's RZ18.
A little further up the budget- Canon's SX230/240/260 Panasonic TZ-25 or 30 Sony's HX10/20 or 30v Nikon's S9100 or the 9200...

i used the sx320 for walkabouts and found it quite good. you might find it at a good price since it's been replaced by the sx260 (i have that now - long story, but i might have been happier to keep the 230). if you don't need manual settings, i had good experiences with the canon elph 510, also, but you need to use a fingernail gently for the touch screen.
