Default L810 or SX40HS

New to the site and have been trying to do my homework. Looking to upgrade from the point and shoot. My question for some users who may have some experience with the Nikon L810 or the Cannon SX40HS. Just wondering if the extra 100 dollars for the Cannon will be money well spent. I mainly will be taking pictures in auto mode, but have become interested in working on improving my understanding and skill with some manual adjustments.

The SX40HS offers quite a bit more than the L810- not least a bigger zoom,tilt/swivel LCD,full manual control,a viewfinder and overall better IQ- definitely worth the extra cash in my opinion.
Maybe consider also Canon's baby bridge- the SX500is.

I think a better match would be the Nikon P510 vs. the SX40is. I have the former and I had the SX30is. The price for the P510 seems to be pretty stable at about $400 The SX40is seems to be available for less than $350 sometimes. I would go for either of these cameras over the L810, if I could afford it.
