Default Moving on from Point & Shoot

I've had a great time with point & shoot cameras (most recently Pentax WG-1) but now I'm looking for a little more control and richer photos. I like optical/electronic viewfinders, and am mistrustful of moving parts (I'm at the beach a lot, and sand jams up the works). I shoot my friends, New York City, the usual stuff. I considered Fujifilm FinePix X100, but was astonished to find it has no zoom. I'm thinking around a 1000 bucks. Any ideas?

If you're looking for an interchangeable lens camera, but you're concerned about sand, you might consider one of Pentax weather resistant dSLRs. One of our members here uses one to cover fire fighters in action, so his is constantly exposed to smoke, soot and ash, and he's had no major problems.
  • The lens is the thing.
  • 'Full Frame' is the new 'Medium Format'.
