Default Looking for my first digital camera

I am looking for my first digital camera and I cannot find one that I like. Some of the things that I am looking for in the camera are good picture quality, good zoom (at least 5x), slightly compact, between $200-300, would like it to be fairly durable so as to be able to handle a little rough handling, am going to be going hiking with it, and I am not sure if I need a great flash. I am thinking of a Nikon Coolpix P330, or P340, not sure if the newer one is necessarily better.

G'day mate

Firstly - welcome to Steve's .. there's lots of people here with heaps of knowledge

There are many cameras in your price range, and those cameras all have very similar options. The biggest thing about a camera - it must fit your hands and the buttons must work for you ~ and you need to try-before-you-buy - a bit like a pair of shoes

- do you need an eyepiece? or will the back screen do?
- do you want 'a bit' of zoom or 'huge' zoom?
- is it to be pocketable or can it hang around your neck?
etc etc

I suggest that you pop over to DP Review.com and have a sqwiz at their camera reviews for all of canon - nikon - fuji - panasonic - and the list goes on
Then you will be in a better position to hunt down one that's just right for you

Has Fuji & Lumix superzoom cameras and loves their amazing capabilities

I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that Steve's has a significant catalogue of camera reviews as well.
  • The lens is the thing.
  • 'Full Frame' is the new 'Medium Format'.
