I've seen several compacts that I like but they do not have a big enough zoom so I am wondering which cameras can take telexenders and how much image quality is lost when using the attachment.

Thanks in advance

Compacts generally don't have zoom... I don't have an yexperience with compacts but I think the lens add-ons aren't that good. They also increase the size so if you really want zoom, try getting a larger camera or something. The telephoto add-on lenses don't add that much magnification anyway (don't expect to go to 10x from 3x with the add-on).

Look to see if you can find a compact (as opposed to an ultra-compact) with around 5x or 6x zoom. I'm not too sure if they are available. I know that the high-end prosumer general cameras (like Canon G6/Sony V3/etc) have 6x zoom but they are much larger and SLR-like size...
