Hi, I'm looking for a digital camera to learn camera controls, and ultimately take quality photographs (ie. portraits, landscapes, etc). Specifically, I'm looking for a reasonably compact model--since this will act as my general purpose camera as well, that will help me progress from an idot beginner to enthusiast by providing a reasonable breadth of manual settings for experimentation. (Of course, I'm also going to try reading about photographic techniques--any book recommendations would also be appreciated--and start learning about photo editing through photoshop).

Based on reading MANY reviews and forum discussions, it seemed like the canon A series (A75, A85, A95, A510) etc is a good fit, however, I owned a Canon A40 which recently died on me (though I did get 2-3yrs use of it), and after reading about E18 errors and other quality issues, thought I'd look at other manufacturers--particularly Sony (since they seem to have quality build and reliability..and good photos of course).

Any thoughts? I'd be curious to know what pros or enthusiasts who own DSLRs carry as a P&S companion to their DSLRs. Are the canons the best to learn techniques with their broad manual controls or are there any sonys (e.g. W1, P150) that are comparable? Are there any manual controls that I should focus on more than others in picking a camera?

Other criteria include (in no particular order);

Under $500
Auto Focus Assist Lamp
Good LCD (no smaller than 1.8")
Fast shot to shot times

Thanks so much in advance, for your help!
