I'm looking into a dSLR and was interested in the following models (based on look / feel from the local camera store):

Nikon D70
Minolta 7D
Pentax *istDS
Olympus E-300

A friend of mine came over with his D70 and Nikon AF 70-300mm F4-5.6G non-ED lens and in trying the D70, I noticed that I could take a clearly focused picture above 200mm when handheld. Since I will not always be carrying a tripod, this got me thinking (a real eye-opener).

Because of this experience, I have now narrowed down my choices to the Nikon D70 with VR lenses or the Minolta 7D with built-in AS.

A store rep seems to think that lens VR is better since it eliminates shakes before the image gets to the sensor.

Which do you think would be the better choice, lens-based VR or camera-based AS? Which would be more effective / reliable for someone starting from scratch?
