In trying to supplement my Olympus D-580's meager flash output, I rigged up a Sunpack 383 on a slave trigger. The Olympus's flash promptly triggered the Sunpack, and bathed the subject with plenty of light. Yet the pictures I took this way were drastically underexposed. How can this be overcome?

Some cameras have a "pre-flash" to help the camera determine exposure. If your camera has this, then it might be setting off the slave too early. Also, a red-eye reduction mode will also fool some slaves into firing too early.
